1. Purpose
The Lions Club of Guernsey is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults who engage with our activities. This policy outlines our approach to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all members, volunteers, and participants.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all Lions Club members, volunteers, event attendees, and anyone involved in club activities, whether in-person or online.
3. Principles
- Welfare First: The well-being of children and vulnerable adults is our top priority.
- Inclusivity: We promote a culture of respect, dignity, and equality.
- Prevention: We take proactive steps to minimize risks of harm or abuse.
- Accountability: All members and volunteers must adhere to safeguarding best practices.
4. Responsibilities
a. Club Leadership
- Ensure safeguarding policies are implemented and reviewed regularly.
- Appoint a Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) to oversee concerns.
- Provide training to members and volunteers on safeguarding procedures.
b. Members & Volunteers
- Follow safeguarding guidelines and report concerns immediately.
- Avoid being alone with children or vulnerable adults where possible.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries in all interactions.
5. Recognising Abuse
Abuse can take many forms, including:
- Physical (hitting, neglect)
- Emotional (bullying, humiliation)
- Sexual (unwanted advances, exploitation)
- Financial (theft, coercion)
- Neglect (failure to provide basic needs)
If you suspect abuse, report it to the Designated Safeguarding Officer without delay.
6. Reporting Procedures
- If a child or vulnerable adult is in immediate danger, contact Guernsey Police at 999.
- For non-emergency concerns, inform the Designated Safeguarding Officer (Lion Paul Allaway / [email protected]).
- Document the incident factually and confidentially.
- Refer to authorities if necessary (e.g., Child and Family Community Services in Guernsey).
7. Safe Recruitment
- Volunteers working with vulnerable groups will undergo background checks (e.g., DBS/equivalent).
- References will be obtained for new members in relevant roles.
8. Online Safety
- Personal data of minors will not be shared without parental consent.
- Social media interactions with children/vulnerable adults will be professional and transparent.
9. Training & Awareness
- Regular safeguarding training will be provided.
- Members must read and acknowledge this policy annually.
10. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed every two years or following significant changes in legislation.
